Chapel of the Steps Construction works at the Steps Chapels were discontinued for almost half a century. The works have been interrupted in 1819 to be resumed only in 1864. Finally, in 1875, all the Steps Chapels were complete with 66 images polychromic in their due places, according to the register dating from 1798. But the Matozinhos Fraternity’s Inventory Book from 1875 lists 64 pieces instead of 66 and there are two explanations for the discrepancy. Either Aleijadinho executed only 64 of the 66 images initially foreseen, or the images would have been led astray during the long period in which they were kept waiting for the end of the construction works.
