Aracaju, the capital of Sergipe, was founded in 1855, planned and sketched in the shape of a chessboard. It is a modern city, now. The old mansions and their backyards were little by little replaced by skyscrapers.
But not even time erased the rich image of cashew trees, the origin of its name. This fruit ornaments the city; they are at the squares, on the walls and on the public telephones.
Considered the prettiest in Brazil, Aracaju’s new coastline is one of the main tourist attractions in the State. Under the friendly sun on calm beaches, it is possible to drink refreshing coconut water or try a delicious crab.
In the evening, it is one big hangout. Besides Atalaia beach, Aracaju seacoast is formed by eight other beaches: Coroa do Meio, Praia dos Artistas, Havaizinho, Aruana, Náufragos, Robalo, Mosqueiro and Prainha do Vaza Barris. Their greatest characteristic is the total absence of rocks and the nice temperature, perfect for the elderly and children.
On Sergipe River margins, that runs alongside Aracaju, the mangrove thickets develop, forming extraordinary biological complexes that live together in balance with plants, fishes, crustaceans and birds.
